I’m a sucker for a unique hotel (here and here) and I know this one has done the rounds, but it’s too good not to add to my wishlist of unique hotels. So, welcome to Giraffe Manor, the luxury hotel in Kenya where you can have breakfast and dinner with friendly giraffes! If you’re an animal lover, I suspect you might just be freaking out right now…
Located 20km outside of Kenya’s diverse capital Nairobi, Giraffe Manor is a five-star hotel with a resident herd of Rothschild Giraffes that roam the 12 acre private property freely – meaning they’ll poke their heads through your luxury bedroom window for a friendly chat whenever they want!
The residence was built in the 1930s by the British Mackintosh family (the ones that make toffees), and has a giraffe centre that was set-up in 1979 as a breeding centre to boost a then endangered population. It has now expanded into conservation and educational programs for Kenyan school children and all the profits of the hotel go towards the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife.It’s a plush place to stay with rooms kitted out with four-poster beds, cool white linens, wooden floors and not surprisingly go for about $380 – $500 per person per night depending on the room –which means unless you’re stinking rich like Mick Jagger, Ewan McGregor or Richard Branson, who have all stayed here, you might need to win the Lottery before checking in.
Coincidentally, Giraffe Manor is located next door to the former home of Karen Blixen, the Danish author of Out of Africa, now a museum in a stunning garden and a baby orphan elephant sanctuary!
