I’m a fair-weather sea swimmer. This means when it’s a hot, sunny day in Brighton and I fancy a cooling dip in the sparkling sea, I’ll have to compete with the world and his granny, if I don’t hit the beach early enough. Although the atmosphere on Brighton seafront is fun in summer, the crowds can be seriously overwhelming. Especially on the stretch of beach between the Palace Pier and West Pier, and further west to Hove Lawns.
Having lived in Brighton and Hove for a long time, I have a list of favourite quiet spots in the city and nearby beaches for escapism. Seeing as I’ve a hunch you’ll want to visit the beach when you next visit Brighton, today I want to share an alternative place to hang out. You’ll also only ever share with a handful of people in the know. Let’s go!
Introducing “my Secret Brighton Beach Club”, a permanent pop-up-style beachfront village, called Sea Lanes, in a regenerated area of the seafront set on the quiet Kemp Town beach. It’s where you’ll find my little Brighton beachfront sauna; the Luna Wave immersive yoga studio; a gym; a swimming centre; a cool coffee place called White Cloud and Bison Beer, which together make a cool little beachfront café-bar open all day and into the evening.
To get you in the mood, here’s what a typical day at the secret Brighton beach club could look like. It would start with some exercise, a yoga class at Luna Wave perhaps; a gym workout or some swim training, then coffee at White Cloud on the terrace before spending the rest of the morning on Kemp Town beach.
After a picnic lunch, it’s time for some afternoon pampering at the Beach Box Sauna. This unique outdoor spa replicates the traditional Scandinavian-style sauna experience, with three wood-fired saunas, a plunge pool, cold showers and a fire pit. They also offer various natural body treatments, like clay face masks and salt scrubs.
Scrubbed, invigorated, refreshed and changed, all there is left to do now is head next door to Bison Bar to end with an early evening sundowner. Ta da!
I hope you enjoyed your tourist-free day on the beach in Brighton! Find my secret Brighton Beach Club, aka Sea Lanes, at 284 Madeira Drive, Brighton BN1 1EN.
