people watching TV together 1950s kitsch

I know what you’re thinking. Why would I pay to wait to have a movie delivered to my door, when there are so many streaming services offering infinite instant entertainment gratification? Isn’t having a movie delivered to your house, a bit retro, a bit 1990s, I hear you say? Yes, it’s true, we’ve moved on technologically since the 90s, but where’s the human interaction? And let’s face it, scrolling through streaming services finding something to watch can be miserable. So, if you’re the kind of person who hates the scrolling, loves human interaction, talking about film, values classic cult, unusual, overlooked, underrated cinema, and gets off on surprises, you’re going to love this.

White Wall Cinema, Brighton’s independent pop-up cinema club (I mentioned here, here and here) – has come up with a unique way to save Brighton cinema and its business in these weird times, by offering an ‘at home’ service – a movie delivery service with a twist, in which you get a surprise film tailored to your tastes, and some movie snacks, delivered to your door, for you to build your own movie night around.

Here’s how it works:

  • You choose your film package – they start at £22 – then email the White Wall movie buffs to let them know you’re ready to go.
  • Organise to discuss your favourite films with them – via video chat or email, up to you. They then put their encyclopaedic film knowledge to the test and choose a film from their archive that’s the perfect fit for you. You won’t know what it is until you get it.
  • Wait for your film to arrive! They post the mystery DVD/BluRay to you to keep, together with some gourmet popcorn, ready for your magical home cinema night. There’s also the option to get them create a personalised introduction to the film, complete with teasers, extra info, trailers and tailored ads, which get you excited for the film.
  • If you enjoy a post-movie discussion, airing your thoughts, arguing plot lines, learning more about a movie’s history, any hidden meanings and insights into it, there’s another option to have an online video chat with the White Wall team after.

They might be Brighton based but they’re happy to send films nationwide and of course do internet link ups to anywhere. Tempted? Sign up for your mystery movie night, here.

The End.
