I often get asked by readers planning a trip to Brighton to recommend a charming, cool, cosy unique and inexpensive hotel. So, while I finish working on an Ellie & Co Hotel Guide (coming soon) – here’s a great place I love directing people to and highly recommend having had a mini staycation here once myself.

The Artist Residence is the perfect small boutique hotel with a stylish bohemian cosy atmosphere. Decor-wise, there’s lots of exposed brickwork, original wooden floors, vintage bits, kilim cushions and rugs, local art, and lots of comfy slouchy armchairs. There are plenty of luxuries, too, like amazing rainfall showers and roll-top baths. It feels like you’re in a rich bohemian artist’s home – and is basically the kind of hotel you’d want to move into – from just £85 a night including breakfast.

There are 24 rooms with enticing names spread across two townhouses on Regency Square close to the seafront – ‘cosy double’, ‘comfy sea view’, ‘bigger sea view’ and ‘below deck’. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed for a romantic break, or is good to visit with friends (below deck the big one is a party room that sleeps 6!). And you can bring dogs!

In the 90s, it was a dilapidated hotel, until a local Brighton couple – Justin and Charlotte Salisbury – brought it back to life. “It was my mum’s guesthouse, but she had a bad accident, so I had to take over, ” Justin tells Conde Nast Traveller. “It needed a complete overhaul – on a budget – so we asked local artists to decorate the rooms in return for bed and board.” There are now there are now five Artist Residence hotels in England (including this amazing one in London).

As well as all the cosy rooms, there’s a cafe for delicious breakfast, a cosy local-favourite restaurant The Set, a cocktail bar, and a lounge. Nearby is the breezy seafront for crisp walks, the West Pier, this curious museum in a shop window only locals know about, galleries to browse, cute shops and cosy restaurants.

I highly recommend The Artist Residence in Brighton as a charming, inexpensive hotel for your next weekend by the seaside!
